About Me

Hello my name is Özlem and my 3 children and I have Lyme disease. I was diagnosed early 2013. At this point I have been suffering from so many seemingly unrelated problems, so getting diagnosed was a relief in a way. It was validation that I was not crazy. What I was feeling was real. Lyme disease is a multi-systemic multi-infectious disease, also known as Multiple Infectious Disease Syndrome. It took 9 years and a doctor who cares to listen to my history to get a proper diagnoses.

I was in a small office in Washington, D.C for something unrelated (or so I thought) and she was taking my history. She said I think you have Lyme disease. I had no idea what that meant. When she proceed to explain what it is and how it can be contracted via a tick bite (among many other ways), I found myself back in my Tennessee trip. Something bit me. I asked my husband (boyfriend at the time) to pull it off. We couldn’t figure out what it was. The following few days I felt tired, nauseous and achy (flu-like symptoms). We thought I was pregnant and took a test. Our excitement was short-lived with a negative pregnancy test. We shrugged off my symptoms thinking it was due to travel. When I came back to the room she was talking about our next steps.

She was very well experienced. She made sure to pass as much information as she can to me, while trying not to cause a panic attack. I still remember her words, let’s just run some tests. Looking back now it was no different from how an oncologist would deliver news to her patients. Despite her warning against reading on this illness, I kept reading, and reading, and reading. With every bit of information I realized I was about to go through hell.

I had this rush of emotions and felt like puking words. Once the fear and the panic settled, I accepted (as much as I could) whether by choice or not a journey had begun to healing. This is how ExtraLymey was born. My main goal with this blog is to share my journey, to raise awareness among unsuspecting people, and to encourage others who are still in the dark to keep pressing for answers.

  • I had Lyme disease with Bell’s palsy in the summer of 6th grade. I caught it in a Late stage, so it affected my brain. I did get most of my nerves working on the right side of my face. I still have fatigue and joint and muscle pain. I hope you can recover as I did.
